Horton Plains National Park

Horton Plains National Park is located 32Km away from Nuwaraeliya, Pattipola road via Ambewela in the highest tableland of Sri Lanka. It is one of the most important catchment areas which act as a giant sponge to store rain water. This marvelous plateau is covered by Montane evergreen forests, Cloud Forests, Grasslands, Marshy Lands and Aquatic eco systems. Horton Plains National Park with rich bio-diversuty spreads across over 3,169 hectares. It is situated at an altitude of 2,100 meters above sea level. Horton plains was declared as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2010, considering that the national park consists of large number of rare and as well asendemic flora and fauna species.

Sandathenna Plains

Sandathenna is plain in far with Horton Plains. This panoramic sight is located very closed to Sitaeliya Potato Cultivation. This grassy plain scattered with cloud forests is home for Wild buffalos, Sambur deers, Wild Boars, and the colourful feather world. Therfore Sandathenna plains is a heaven for nature enthusiasts,This picturesque plains is situated 8Km far from Nuwara Eliya. Moon Plains prove to be an ideal place for a hike with beautiful landscapes galore. The view from the Mini World’s Peak at sunrise is especially spectacular with the golden glow of the sun, mixing with the mist that wreaths the peaks and valleys surrounding the area.

Hakgala Botanical Garden

It is located at the base of the Hakgala Mountain on Nuwara Eliya Badulla Road, 8Km far from Nuwara Eliya. The garden has a cool temperate climate because of altitude is 5,400 feet above the sea level. The mean annual temperature ranges between 16 °C to 30 °C during the course of a year. From December to February it has a cold climate, while the warm climate persists from April to August. Namunukula Mountain range can be seen from this second largest botanical garden in Sri Lanka. Rare plants, Orchids and roses can be seen here. Plenty of visitors visit this garden to enjoy the bloom of roses.

Victoria Park

This beautifully, blooming park is situated in the middle of the Nuwaraeliya town. There are number of blooming plants in this park. So that visitors never forget rainbow colours of the full bloom and the delightful fragrant of the flowers spread across 27 acres. Among the blooms visitors can do bird watch. This park comes alive with many endemic and migrant species of birds. Diverse verities of roses adorn this park in month April.

Galvez Land National Reserve

This reserve is situated 1Km far from Nuwara-Eliya on Udapussellawa road. It can be reached while travelling 500m along Galvez road started from Economic- Centre of Nuwaraeliya. It has been declared twice as a reserve on 27th May, 1938 and 18th May, 2006. Among the rich bio diversity ferns and birds acquire specialty in this reserve. It is said that, there is paradise of 35 endemic and exotic bird species of this reserve. Rare plants, Lizards and other animals can be seen here.

Golf Course

The oldest golf course of Sri Lanka is located at the center of pleasing and chilly Nuwaraeliya town. It is world famous and the best Golf Course in Asia. This 18 hole Golf Course has been established in 1889. The course covers approximately 40.5 hectares (100 acres) of land and was originally built amidst the tea plantations of this central highland region.

Devon Falls

Devon Falls is the 19th place of waterfalls in Sri Lanka according to the height of them. It is situated at the 20th mile post of Thalawakele- Haton road. It is on the A 7 road, 30Km west to the Thalawakele. Vision Center and the Car Park are the best place where anyone can have a picturesque view of this fall.

St. Clair Falls

It is located at Talawakele on the Hatton- Talawakele A 7 Highway. Actually, it has been divided into two segments and 80m in height and 50m wide. Two segments are called ‘Maha ella’ and ‘ Kuda ella’. St. Clair is known as ‘Little Nayagara of Sri Lanka’ considering its heavenly beauty. This fascinating fall is visited and enjoyed by many foreign ad local tourists.

Lake Grogory

Lake Gregory is situated at Magastota which is 1Km far from Nuwaraeliya. This luxurious place has been arranged for the complete benefit of its visitors. Splendid environment addes with Swan boat rides, Horse rides, walking and cycling paths is provided heavenly pleasure park for the local and foreign tourists. Other than that visitors can have the pleasure of sunset.

New Zealand Farm – Ambewela

New Zealand Farm which has been established in 1940 is situated 17Km far from Nuwaraeliya, on Nuwaraeliya- Pattipola road. The land of this farm is the largest grassland of Sri Lanka. The best breed of cattle in Sri Lanka grown up in an excellently clean, tranquil and free environment of Ambewela. Poultry animals, Pigs, Rabbits and Goats can be seen in this farm that grown here other than cattle for livestock products.

Sitha Amman Kovil

Seetha Amman Temple is located approximately 1 kilometre (0.62 mi) from Hakgala Botanical Garden and 5 kilometres (3.1 mi) from Nuwara Eliya. The temple is located in the village of Seetha Eliya (also known as Sita Eliya). This place is believed to be the site where Sita was held captive by (Vikram) king Ravana, and where she prayed daily for Rama to come and rescue her in the Hindu epic, Ramayana. On the rock face across the stream are circular depressions said to be the footprints of Lord Hanuman.

Mahaweli Maha Seya

This religious edifice is situated at Kadadora, Kothmale. It can be reached by the road close to the view point at Kadadora on the road to the New Town- Kothmale from Gampola via Ulapane. The height of this shell shaped stupa is 289 Ft. and it is the second-highest stupa in Sri Lanka. The stupa was built in commemoration of over 50 submerged temples and the people who lost their properties as a consequence of the Mahaweli Development programme in the early 1980s

Pattipola Railway Station

This railway station is the highest railway Station of Srilanka. It was built in 1898. It is on Nuwaraeliya- Pattipola road, 20 Km far from Nuwara Eliya via Ambewela. This station consists of only one platform and two railway tracks until now. That means, its superiority hasn’t been renovated after it had been established. Therefore, travellers can enjoy the station in its original situation. Pattipola is at 1892 meters above sea level.

Post Office- Nuwaraeliya

The building where the post office of Nuwaraeliya is operated a colonial building belongs to British era. It was built according to the standard of Tudor Building Models of England. This admirable building was built out of using red bricks. In 2012 the former living quarters of the postmaster, on the upper floor of the post office, was converted into tourist accommodation. On the 26 December 1990 Sri Lanka Post issued a Rs. 10 stamp with a photograph of the Post Office, to commemorate World Postal Day.

Sri Pada- Adam’s Peak

Approach road via Ginigathhena- Hatton road to Maussakele from there via nallathanniya is the most famous route. The sacred footprint of Lord Buddha is worshipped by pilgrims of other religions as they believe that the scared footprint is the founders of their religion. Therefore, this sacred place is made unity among different religions. The glanderous environment and the gleaming waters cascading down the mountain are pleasured by many tourists while climbing hundreds of cemented steps

Kothmale Reservoir

This massive reservoir can be seen from the view point at Kadadoraon Gampola -Kothmale road via Ulapane. Constructions of the Dam across the Kothmale Oya have been commenced on 4th February in 1979. Kadadora and Thispane hill were linked by 352 ft wide and 1927ft high dam. The crystal clear waters of the reservoir cover across 2360 acres.

Castlereagh Reservoir

Castlereagh reservoir is the first reservoir in Sri Lanka. It is located 27Km far off on Castlereagh road which is linked to Ginigathhena- Hatton road. It has been establish as a water storage of the Wimalasurendra hydro power station which is the first hydro power station of Sri Lanka

Beliul Oya

This beautiful fall located at Lamasuriya which is an attractive village. It is 25Km far from Randenigala road via Adhikarigama- Hanguranketha. It is also a scenic beauty which attracts passerby. The natural rock formation, forest cover at the banks of it and the green rows paddy fields are exceed the splendor of Beliul Oya
